About the Working Group
The CUPE 3903 Palestine Solidarity Working Group is comprised of rank-and-file union members dedicated to advocating for Palestinian liberation through various events and initiatives at York University. This working group receives material support from the Trans Feminist Action Caucus, which you can click here to learn more about.
They are one of our union’s various working groups, which are groups formed to carry out the work of rank-and-file members. Working groups in CUPE 3903 are open, self-determined, and semi-autonomous. They are also accountable to both the Executive Committee and the general membership.
The CUPE 3903 membership voted to formally include the Palestine Solidarity Working Group as part of our union’s structure and bylaws in January 2024. Since then, they have pursued a variety of campaigns and initiatives. They’re always looking for members who want to get involved and support their work!
Mandate
The mandate of the CUPE 3903 Palestine Solidarity Working Group is:
- To educate and organize the CUPE 3903 membership about issues relating to matters of Palestinian solidarity and to encourage membership participation both within the working group and the local on this issue.
- To work within and to help build rank and file networks of union activists working on issues of Palestinian solidarity.
- To co-ordinate with other union and non-union organizations – both inside the university and beyond – to organize and support actions in support of Palestinian solidarity.
- To actively participate in challenging anti-Palestinian racism, and protect the academic and civil rights of those engaged in work around Palestine.
- To advocate for the end of York’s institutional support of Palestinian oppression in alignment with the goals of the BDS campaign, including academic/cultural boycotts and divestment from arms and weapons manufacturers, in keeping with CUPE 3903’s resolution to support the BDS campaign in 2005.
Current Projects and Campaigns
- Partnering with Genocide Report: “As we mark the three year anniversary of Israel’s latest phase of ethnic cleansing and active and ongoing genocide, York University continues to maintain ties to Israeli academic institutions complicit in and embedded within Israel’s ongoing regime of occupation, apartheid, and genocide against Palestinians. These partnerships violate international law, principles of academic freedom, and York’s own claims to uphold decolonization, equity, diversity and inclusion. This deep dive into publicly available data catalogues and details these ties.”
