Navigating Racism and Sexism in the University Classroom

March 20 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

University educators, including teaching assistants and contract faculty, are often subject to issues of racism and sexism in the classroom, among other forms of discrimination and harassment. Recent and ongoing attacks on the humanities might further exacerbate the problem, posing a serious threat to educators who integrate and take up equity and social justice in our curricular and pedagogical choices.

As a part of the Mentoring Program Fund, this session seeks to support CUPE 3903 members who are interested in developing pedagogical strategies and skills that create an inviting classroom environment while also learning how to navigate potential conflicts and even racist/sexist microaggressions that take form. It is to ask, how might we intervene and respond to these instances and how do we promote critical exchange in times of crisis?

This session will be facilitated by Dr. Gabrielle Moser. She is an art historian, writer, and independent curator. Dr. Moser is the author of Projecting Citizenship: Photography and Belonging in the British Empire (Penn State University Press, 2019) and, with Adrienne Huard, co-edited a special issue of Journal of Visual Culture on reparation (2022). Moser is currently at work on her second book, Citizen Subjects: Photography and Sovereignty in Post-War Canada (under contract with McGill-Queen’s University Press). A founding member of EMILIA-AMALIA, she is an Associate Professor of Aesthetics and Art Education in the Faculty of Education at York University in Toronto, Canada.
