Tribute to Neil Livingston and His Impact at CUPE 3903

It is with great sadness that we observe the passing of Neil Livingston, a member of CUPE 3903 who made an impact on many within our union in his too short time among us.

Neil—who passed away on September 26, 2024—passionately supported his fellow members and fought injustice at York University. He actively engaged in university governance, serving as a Senate Representative. Neil possessed a keen knowledge of the structure of the university, an astute understanding of its inner workings, and a dedication to sharing that knowledge with others. His thoughtful and passionate report-backs on Senate meetings helped everyone understand how that institution works and why it matters.

Neil brought his deep knowledge, experience, and passion to the Employment Equity Committee and the Advisory Committee on Race/Ethnic Relations, Discrimination and/or Harassment.  He approached this work with care and joy, often sharing stories about his father, a human rights lawyer. Neil’s love for his family came through in all of the work he did with the union. He gave his time so generously while simultaneously coordinating school drop-offs, pick-ups, after school snacks, and homework assignments.  Despite the multiple demands on his time, Neil never gave the impression that he was anything less than fully present and meaningfully engaging with you.

Sharing this knowledge was just one of the ways Neil supported our community. Many will remember him for kindly sharing his own wellness journey with all who needed it. During the 2024 strike, Neil helped many members make much-needed space for solace and rest. His commitment to facilitating Qi Gong for Striking Workers week after week provided a notable avenue for intentional reflection. The meditation and mindfulness techniques that Neil guided members through gently supported them to continue fighting for better wages, benefits, and working conditions. These sessions provided meaningful respite from picket lines and other strike-related duties. This type of contribution was unique, and it speaks to who Neil was as a person.

Neil’s light has shown us how to engage in the struggle in a way that is both insightful and critical while also holistic and caring. He will be missed and remembered.
