Notice to Pro-Tem Executive Committee Positions

The Executive Committee is giving notice that it will pro-tem appointments to fill four vacant executive positions (on a temporary or interim basis):

  • Secretary-Treasurer
  • Lead Steward Unit 1
  • Lead Steward Unit 5
  • Vice President Unit 3

Following Article 14.v(b) of our bylaws, the Executive Committee will fill these positions at its January 27 meeting by a simple majority vote. Because there is not sufficient time to run a proper nomination and campaigning period between 27 January and the AGM in March, members elected pro-tem will hold their positions until the annual executive committee elections in March.

Any member in good standing may nominate themselves for the Secretary-Treasurer position. The other positions are unit-specific, so eligibility is limited to members in good standing of the relevant units. You can find descriptions of each Executive Committee position in Article 9 of our bylaws.

For more information or to nominate yourself for a pro-tem appointment to one of the above positions, please email Zoë Newman, Chairperson, at cupe3903chairperson@gmail.com by 12PM (noon) on January 27, 2025. Nominees should include a brief candidate statement (maximum 200 words).

Should members have any accessibility concerns, please contact our Staff Representative Equity at cupe3903equity@gmail.com.

Note: Details of the upcoming by-election and annual elections will be communicated in the coming weeks. Per Article 14 (Elections), elections and by-elections comprise a two-week nomination period, a two-week campaign period (for contested positions), and a five-day voting period. (Anyone running uncontested will be declared elected when the nomination period closes.)

Context: The positions of Secretary-Treasurer and Lead Steward Unit 1 positions have become vacant due to resignation. Vice President Unit 3 has been vacant since the Fall of 2024 due to lack of applicants. Lead Steward Unit 5 is a new position to represent our newest unit (workers at the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness). You can find descriptions of these Executive Committee positions in Article 9 of our local’s bylaws.
