JHSC: Informal Guide to Resolving Environmental Concerns

Check out this very informal, unofficial guide, featuring advice from your CUPE 3903 Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) representatives about how to resolve environmental concerns in your workplace at York U!

The CUPE 3903 JHSC representatives have received multiple informal reports of unusually low & high temperatures in offices and poor air quality in certain classrooms. They have provided this flowchart to help navigate the often complicated resolution process for environmental health concerns.

If you’re noticing that your workspace is too hot, too cold, or lacking airflow, it’s important to know what steps to take so that you can keep yourself and other workers as safe as possible. These steps include recording evidence, acting appropriately, and following up on the issue.

Please reach out to the CUPE 3903 JHSC email if you need further support on contacting the right people! Email them: cupe3903jhscreps@gmail.com

A flowchart labelled “Informal Guide to Resolving Environmental Concerns - Tips for CUPE 3903 members!” with the CUPE 3903 logo and a QR code leading to the JHSC webpage (https://cupe3903.org/committees/jhsc/). The flowchart delineates various steps for reporting if your workplace is too hot/cold, lacking airflow, or other environmental concerns. The steps delineated involve recording evidence (such as a photo of a thermostat or air quality monitor), leaving immediately and filling out a Workplace Incident Report (WIR) form if it’s unsafe, calling facilities (at 416-736-2100 ext. 22401) to report the issue, mailing the relevant Health & Safety Officer (list available on the JHSC webpage), facilities inspecting, JHSC investigating if a WIR form is filled out, and following-up if the issue reoccurs. The flowchart directs viewers to check the 3903 JHSC webpage for more info and also to email the JHSC at cupe3903jhscreps@gmail.com
