Tips for a York University Contract Faculty CV

Members of CUPE 3903 Unit 2 (contract faculty) at York University have to submit an updated CV with their job applications. This CV is very important to ensure that you are considered for the jobs for which you are qualified!

Your CV that you use to apply for contract faculty positions at York should not look like one you would use for other kinds of work. See our tips below to tailor your CV for work at York.

  1. Identify the job postings you are most interested in

If you are submitting a blanket application, you are applying to all available jobs in that hiring unit. However, you still want to identify the positions you are most interested in. Both the paper and online applications will ask you to list these under “courses requested”. Make a note of the relevant keywords from the preferred and required qualifications sections of the job posting. You will use those to tailor your CV.

  1. List ALL your teaching experience

Don’t worry about brevity—it’s not that kind of CV. List everything. Group your work experience by type, i.e. all course directorships together, all tutor positions together, etc.

  1. Use keywords in your position descriptions

You should describe the duties of each position you have held in bullet point format. Make sure these descriptions reflect the keywords you’ve identified from the postings. Hiring units often use keyword search to determine if you are qualified or not for any given position.

  1. Use keywords for your publications

This is not a full-on annotated bibliography of your publications! You can list all of your publications, but make sure that any publications that are relevant to the qualifications for the positions you’re interested in have bullet points or a brief description that highlight those keywords. Sometimes, the title of a publication doesn’t say everything about it that could be relevant to a position you’re interested in.

  1. Include skills, teachable areas, and professional associations

Make sure to include these each as separate sections. Tailor them to the positions you’re interested in to the extent possible.
